BruintjiesHoogte MTB Race Report by Jason ReedBruintjies Hoogte MTB Race Report by Jason Reed The weather was excellent for this year’s Bruintjies MTB race. I was not feeling very confident as my training was far off the volume of my previous years. However, I was well rested and excited to participate! The race started quite casually going up the first climb. A small group of us broke away from the main field, and by the top of the first climb it was only Johannes Gerber from PE and myself. Just before we reached the crest of the top, I dropped down a few gears and gave an all out sprint to test Johannes. This effort brought about a gap which I maintained until the start of the second big climb of the day, Johannes joined my side and we began chipping away at the climb. About a third up the climb my legs still felt good and I picked up the pace a tad. This is where I started making the gap on Johannes. From there on I just rode carefully on the down-hills trying not to crash or puncture and worked really hard on the up-hills and flats towards the finish. Thanks very much to the organisers and sponsors for a well put together event. Also well done to all the other riders for finishing this tough mtb race, there were some tired looking riders at the end.
