Caitlin de Wet

CAITLIN DE WET – 24/06/1991

Caitlin started her cycling career at the age of 13. Her first official race was the 15 km fun ride at Barberton in 2005. Dad was doing the Mazda Drifter series at the time. It did not go so well. The kids took a wrong turn and in the rush to get back on track, she crashed out. The ego was more bruised than anything else.

In a way Barberton has been the story of her short career: The following year she was back. In heavy rain and without gears, she finished the half marathon and won the Junior ladies category. 2007 she won the race overall. 2008 she defended her title successfully.

During these last 4 years she has been the SA half marathon champ 3 times, she won the Drifter half marathon series and collected a quite few silver and bronze medals in the SA Road & Time Trial championships along the way.

2008 must have been the highlight of her career, when she was selected to represent South Africa twice in one year: For Cross Country World Champs in Italy and Junior Road World Champs in Cape Town. She is the first lady ever to accomplish this.

Cross Country remains her first love. After school she plans on making a career out of it. She wants to compete in the Cross Country World Cup Series and her ultimate goal is, of course, the Olympic Games. First priority, however, is Matric.

Caitlin is currently sponsored by Mongoose/Red, Kenda, Fast Fuel and Adidas Eyewear.
