Andrea von Holdt
Although I started cycling relatively recently (4 yrs ago), I loved it from the 1st time I bought my (road) bike and entered the 94.7. I got very motivated after that and took part in many more road races. I’m very competitive, so kept on wanting to better my times and do as well as I could. I also liked what cycling did for my body. I took part in the Tour d’Afrique MTB stage race from Cairo to Cape Town in 2004, as part of a relay team, where I completed the final stage, 11 000km from Windhoek to Cape Town. I borrowed a mountain bike for this event. It was then that I got hooked on long-distance stage racing. A friend invited me to be her partner for the 2005 Cape Epic, which we completed successfully, in 6th place (ladies division). I have taken part in many mountain bike enduro’s since then and prefer the long distance events, such as the Trans Baviaans 24hr event. I have also taken part in a number of XC events in the Eastern Cape. Although I really enjoy XC, I prefer enduro’s. I would like to increase my fitness and strength this year, aiming towards the Cape Epic 2009.
In brief:
• Andrea started cycling in 2004
• She is based in the Eastern Cape, which is where she does most of her mountain biking, although for team events, she has travelled all over SA.
• Her race partner for the team events is Anthea Gould, based in Jhb, so they don’t often get chance to train together; they really only race together!
• Her only sponsor is the Coega Development Corporation
• Her focus is mountain biking
• Her strengths are enduro’s and stage races; and she's a good climber, kind of a mountain goat!
• Her only weaknesses are sprinting and technical downhills, but she's working on improving these, so whatch out!!
• Favourite races: Cape Epic, Dirty Double series, Sabie Experience, Tour d’ Afrique, Trans Baviaans
